Best use of Licenced Music in a game

Recommended Posts

Stolen from Outsidexbox, but a good idea.
A great OST is a great OST, but where have there been genius implementations of licenced music in your opinion, and why?

Rhythm games such as Rock Band don't count. Original scores that have gone on to become music in it's own right is fine.

There are plenty of examples but for my personal tops are here:

Wipeout 2097: Firestarter - the Prodigy
One of the earliest examples of Licenced music in games that I experienced. Completely matched the image of the game.

X Wing vs Tie Fighter: John Williams Score
Again an early one, but hearing that eery music start on the first boot up just sent chills down my spine. I was in the star wars universe, completely and utterly. just hearing it now brings back floods of memories (mainly of shitty dial-up, but amazing times too).

Burnout 3 Takedown: I'm not ok - My Chemical Romance
The general selection was great for this, but whenever this song kicked in it just ramped the game up so many levels. I was ready to battle, and battle hard!

(view about 13 seconds in)

Saints row 2: Final Countdown - Europe
Many people point to SR 3's inspired licenced music selection, but when I heard my cockerny avatar suddenly belt out karaoke with this one I just knew they hit the tone of the game amaaaaazingly well. Bonus was that I was in a helicopter at the time and bombing the shit out of stuff.

Little Big Planet 2: A fifth of Beethoven - Walter Murphy
As per saints row 2. Just hit the tone amazingly well.

(view from 5:54)

Far cry 3: Bun dem - Skrllex
I was not expecting this at all, and the juxtaposition against the rest of the OST made the level and anarchy even better.

Bioshock infinite: God only Knows
Amazing use of the song on so so so many levels. On the surface it shows that there has been interference with time, but it also is the key to the whole game. Genius.

Weird, I like embedding stuff.

Assssshhhhhh?

Why does everyone (i.e. not just you Ped) reference X-Wing vs Tie Fighter when talking about that series? It's just a multiplayer game at a time when they weren't massive, and that series is really about the single player and gripping story... X-Wing and Tie Fighter used the same score, and Alliance which came after XvT improved on everything in those games!

Music wise, this was the first time for using CD for audio. X wing and Tie Fighter had great orchestrations, true, but the whole novelty of hearing crystal clear orchestrations rather than MIDI just go along with the overall polish that XvT had. Alliance did the same, and was arguably the better game (if only they had put more multiplayer features in!), but XvT did it first, and so had that initial WOW impact.

Mafia 3. From the minute All along the Watchtower kicks in on the title screen to tearing around the Bayou to Fortunate Son never has such a loving, game elevating collection of timeless classics been put into a game.

I cant name the track, but this scene in What Remains of Edith Finch is a great use of music.

I think the forum only lets you embed a few things per post then ignores it.

I'm surprised at the Burnout 3 one, I distinctly remember a consensus at the time that the soundtrack was one of the worst things about it.

I quite liked in Far Cry 3 when Flight of the Valkyries played.

Certainly wasn't my cup of tea. Had the Xbox version so I just told it to use what I'd put on the hard drive. Stryker was the worst thing about Burnout 3 Edited by Shufty

Tchaikovsky, waltz of the flowers. Lovely composition.*

Maybe B3's music is being looked through from rose tinted glasses, but certainly that track I liked running through with. Oh if only they did a psn remaster, I'd be all over that.

*yes, I like classical music a lot. What of it? :P
