Red Dead Redemption 2

I’m finding it a bit slow so far. Too much new information, not enough shooting (although even that is clunky). Also struggling to read the text and mini map icons. It looks great but perhaps a little washed out in HDR. Might be my TV, or they’ve gone for a softer, more realistic look. Need to play more.

I think it's magnificent. So many open world games have just become crammed with mindless distractions, that the slower pace of this is like a minty fresh breeze. I'm sat at work just thinking about getting back on it asap.

Just saw an article on Eurogamer saying HDR is broken, so turn it off. Hopefully when I try it tonight it will make it all look a little less dull.

I played it a bit more and am enjoying it more. Just done a few more story missions, but not a fan of the micromanaging of the settlement, to the extent where I’m not even bothering. This is exactly the sort of thing I would have loved when I was at uni or part time, but put me off Fallout 4. I don’t have time for it.

Just heard on the Bombcast that the mobile app has stuff in it that indicates a PC version is on the way... they also said that these are basically PCs anyway, GTA online made $1B on PC and GTA5 was ported so it's pretty darn likely.

I just started Mass Effect again on XBone back compat so will eventually get to this, I should probably play GTA V first as this probably has improved stuff over their last game.

I think it suffers a bit from a lack of direction. In RDR your goals were clear and simple right from the off. Your wife and kid are taken and you are forced to go after your old gang. Here I don't have a clue what the goal is after 20 hours still! I've just moved to slightly warmer campsites and robbed shit up.

I'm still really enjoying it mind, just don't think it's as good as the first.

  • 1 year later...

Mega Bump, almost 2 years to the day!

I'm now over 40 hours in, I'm on Chapter 3 but not sure how many missions chapter 3 consists of and frankly I don't want to. For reference my story completion is only at 34% and game completion is at 44%.

I started playing this a little over a year ago and quickly bounced off it, mainly due to what everyone else was on about. The slow pace, the direction-less story. Yet now I'm loving the game for these things. I boot it up and do one mission here, a side story there. Sometimes it'll take an hour, other times a whole lot less. I'm giving money to the camp and upgrading shit, I'm not sure if I'm actually seeing a benefit to it but I'm happy just role playing as Arthur...

It looks amazing and the attention to detail is meticulous in some cases. It's something else.

I want to finish this before my PS5 turns up in 17 days but I can't see that happening tbh, I just don't want to rush this game, I'm happy just fishing and robbing :)
