Worst. Monitor. Ever.

Recommended Posts

Did a GPU upgrade to a GTX 760 from my HD6850 today. Grabbed a new 1080p monitor as well to upgrade my 1680x1050 panel I've had for 5 years or so. GPU is amazing, Monitor... less so. Was ok with it to start with - it looked nice and clear running Tales of Xillia, so did the PC upgrade next and plugged it in. Thought the colours looked a bit washed out, but figured I would sort it playing with the settings and the nVidia colour settings. 2 hours of tweaking and while bright, outdoor areas in games looked fantastic, anything darker became a horrible, grey washed out mess. No matter what I did. Still, I thought I might adapt... until I loaded up Blood Dragon and couldn't see the floor because it was a horrible grey colour.

For example, here's the scene with the monitor at 0 brightness (no flash or anything, just my phone camera. Doesn't pick up detail off screens very well, but you get the idea):

Here we are at 100 brightness...

Here we are after downloading Acer's recommended colour profile for windows:

And here's the same scene on my old monitor.

Especially look at the third image. The area around the crosshair is just incomprehensible. It's just... grey. The camera probably exaggerates the backlight bleed, it's more gradual in reality, but still... my old monitor is 100 times better.

Useless piece of shit. Phoned up dabs and had a moan. It's either faulty or (more likely) just a crap monitor. Organised a return and a refund. Anyone got some monitor recommendations?

I'm using an iiyama that I got for my birthday last year. I'd never heard of them before but the price to quality ratio is amazing. Everything looks lovely and the monitor design is sleek and quiet.

Luckily the GPU is ace. Just loaded up an area in Last Light that crippled my FPS with the 6860. Turned the settings up from High to Very High, AF to 16x and Tesselation up to full and it just blitzed it. Awesome.

Another vote for Iiyama. Their screens are ridiculous value for the quality as Sly has so eloquently already stated. I've been rocking one of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/computers-accessories/dp/B0050T07R2) for two years now, and don't feel a need to upgrade yet. The colours and response times knock my £1000 Sony TV to touch.

Went with a Dell IPS display from Overclockers in the end. Cost me £150, heard IPS displays were good so went for it. It's bloomin lovely. The colours etc are just perfect on it. It's actually slightly smaller than my old one but don't mind because the pixel density is so high as a result. Tiny bezel on it as well, you can't even see it when the screen is off.
