another poc building thread

Recommended Posts

I can't be arsed opening up my PC, concentrating on getting it back up and running as I've done a full reinstall of Windows.

Skyrim now has 27 mods installed and it still doesn't skip a beat, looks absolutely stunning.

Anyone know how to display the FPS in Skyrim? I'm assuming hit ¬ for console and type /fps or something similar.

*EDIT*

Scratch that, just remembered I have set VSYNC as my TV only does 60hz so the game will be limiting itself to 60fps max.

I was going to build a PC this year as I doubt I will get a Xbone or PS4 for a while and buying components at a time means I can spread the cost through the year but I've gotten sidetracked with another little project instead.

I was going to get a decent NAS and set up a media player so I can stream movies and music throughout the house but decided it would cheaper to a build a 4 bay NAS and run FreeNAS than buy a 2 bay QNAP or Synology NAS neither of which would come with HDDs in them.

However after looking for components and parts I ended up buying one of these on ebay instead: http://www.ebay.co.uk/ctg/HP-ProLiant-MicroServer-N36L-1P-1GB-U-Emb-SATA-NHP-250GB-LFF-150W-PS-/118431402 picked up a 2nd hand one that had barely been used and had a memory upgrade and HD graphics card in it for £112 plus a copy of Windows Home Server so I could either run that or FreeNAS on it.

Just need to pick some HDDs, looking at buying 3 1TB disks at £30 a pop and using them in RAID 5 config for performance and redundancy.

Only slight issue as it would be a software RAID and non-hot swap but that would just mean I would need to shut the box down to replace any failed disks.

I'm gagging to mod my case by moving the hard drive and sticking another 120mm fan in the HDD bay, but I'm hesitant due to the warranty and the fact that it is such a tiny case I'm worried I will damage something as I will have to literally strip everything out just to move the hard drive. The cable management they did was shocking though so I may do it just so I can tidy up the cables.

Sorta PC related, my shit TV is on its last legs, there's a bazillion 40-42" HDTV's on offer in the sales, but anyone got any recommendations for PC use? ideally low latency and 4:4:4 or 1:1 pixel mapping.

Score! That looks the bollocks, just need to convince the Mrs. Wish it had 3 hdmi but that's not a huge problem. Cheers.

My big issue is, the TV is fine but only as a TV, the HDMI inputs on it are rapidly dying on me, last night the screen blinked off 6 times in 10 minutes while playing Skyrim. The mrs doesn't see this so doesn't think there's anything wrong with the TV.

For her it's a perfectly fine TV, but for me it's all but useless.
